Hogmanay in Porty

Post by scossie5 » 08 Dec 2004, 14:04

Since so many of you are longtime Porty people, any suggestions about where best to view the 7 hills fireworks on Hogmanay? New wee one in the family means slogging around Princes St isn't an option, but Aussie relatives visiting mean we need to be able to offer them something memorable. (And not admit that we were too busy/slack to get party tickets in the free draw)

Thanks for all advice (except on spelling or syntax).

The flat roof of my friend's bungalow conversion in Seaview crescent offers a good view I've been told :D
Last year Scossie, there were no fireworks up town because of the weather, but we had a great time down on Porty beach, gathered round a bonfire with friends, letting off the remnants of our firework collection from Guy Fawkes. We were not the only ones as there were several bonfires and lots of other families doing the same as us. Porty fair out-partied Princes Street. Seem to remember seeing that "The Dalriada" are hosting a New Year Bash this year.
Remember too that you can still get Party passes by joining the First Foot Club, but they won't be free :(

Hm, yes, us too. Beach was invaded by refugees from town, looking for a bit of fun somewhere. We were also round a bonfire....turned out to be the wrong one though! Expect to do the same this year, but you don't see the seven hills fireworks from there. You can hear them though.

I think they're £17.50 each, but I might be wrong.

Not that many years ago, when the passes were first introduced, people (including me) objected on the basis that as soon as it became a ticketed event then it would start becoming a chargeable event...

Ho Hum

Pay to get into your own city centre? Doesn't actually seem like such a big deal from the distance of Porty, but when we lived by the Usher Hall and then up by the Links, it felt like a damn cheek.

Thrilled to know that the beach is the place - I love beach fires but never really knew if they were kosher here! Must get some fireworks in!

we've gone up Arthurs Seat in the past - one year it was beautiful as it had been snowing. You get a pretty good view across the city and you don't have to climb the whole way up

What's the 'beach etiquette', do you have to bring your own bonfire or can you join someone else's

Sandra and I were planning on heading down to the beach this Hogmanay, never went last year (our 1st in Porty) so be good to go somewhere local.

Well, yes, that's exactly what we did last year when we couldn't find the right bonfire  ...
