Interesting warning

Post by bellybabe » 03 Nov 2004, 19:49

I bought a new sauté pan yesterday. Boring, I know, but anyway.
I was trying hard to ignore my children, so began to read through the instructions that came with it (no, not "Cook. Eat.") so they'd think I was busy. It had Glass Cover Precautions, Use and Care instructions (including erm...clean it, and the rather interesting "Phenolic knobs are oven safe at temperatures up to 177 degrees celsius" ), and finally a "Caution". It was not the don't-touch-hot-stuff-with-bare-hands type thing I'd imagined. No, it says:
"CAUTION
For safety, please keep pet birds out of kitchen."
O-kay then.
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

It's because you might get confused, and end up with Tweety Saute.

Welcome Mrspoon.
:D
The warning is not as strange as it initially seems. When I was younger I had a neighbour who had a C ockatoo that was anorexic and as is common with such afflictions was hellbent on self harm. The kitchen offered a number opportunities.

It used to swoop over the deep fat fryer, trying to scald its feet, then twist to get sucked in by the extractor hood.

It wasn't bothered about the odd phenolic knob. It wasn't a C ockatoo by accident.

Teflon is toxic to birds. The fumes can kill them if it is overheaeted. Strange, but true.

They're thinking of banning it because it's thought to be toxic for people too. A sustance almost exactly the same is banned in the USA.

That may be true but its not really relevant to the C ockatto as Teflon wasn't widely available in those days.
