The village of Poynton did away with their lights. You can see what happened here:

Re: Bath Street Traffic Restrictions

I see that signs have gone up announcing that the double yellow lines are to extended even further on the 5th of April. I think the council are completely out of touch with the community on this issue.

Re: Christmas lights on the high street

I’ve supplemented the Christmas cheer with an animation projected onto the rear gable of 43 Bath Street, best viewed from Regent Street. It’s not a great piece of animation, just something I pulled from the internet, but hopefully it's helps cheer the place up. I should be projecting until the 27th ...

In 1894 there were 18 grocers on the High Street. Now we're panicking about half a dozen or so.

Yes, I can summarise. PPAG said they didn't want a school on the park. PFANS said they did. Both positions were repeated many times. That was about it.

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review

I hate to disagree with you Bob but in a representative democracy like ours the minority view almost always prevails. No party has ever gained more than 50% of the vote in a post-war general election yet there has almost always been a parliamentary majority. I don't think democracy will get us a new...

Re: Hovercraft / ferry service from Fife to Portobello?

Just received the following email: Dear PMAG, The Planning Application for a Hovercraft slipway etc was TURNED DOWN today by the Council's Planning (Dev Man Sub Committee) on traffic/parking, visual (appearance/effect on the Prom) and noise grounds, I have just heard. The vote was apparently 6 again...

I called the council and was told that there were no plans to change any parking restrictions and that the council would not consider making any changes while consultation was going on about the wider parking issues. Clearly, they lied.

Re: How can we revive our High Street?

One way to reduce the number of empty shops on the High Street and create a better environment for all would be to demolish some of them. Many of the shops appear to have been built to accommodate the boom years when Portobello was a popular resort. Now that the resort has gone, maybe the shops need...

That is only the costs that you have to pay the other side if you lose according to the BBC article. You still have to pay your own costs, which may be how a figure of £80k was arrived at.

Maybe the fire brigade should have measured the width of the streets that they serve before buying a fire engine that is too wide to fit down our streets.

Promoting Portobello and Portobello Beach?

admin: split from "Portobello Beach" sign . As a matter of interest, why are we so keen to get people to visit the beach? It's not as though it's going to close down if no-one turns up. There are only four businesses on the front and they all seem packed most of the time. None of the businesses on ...

The "£12 per session" figure is pretty meaningless unless you can put it in context. Presumably all visits to the pool are subsidised as Edinburgh Leisure doesn't make a profit. For example, if every visit to Portobello pool is subsidised by £11, then the crèche visit doesn't seem too bad. If the fi...
