Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

Geoff -Re consultation. Is the website you mention the official place for parents to put in their comments? If so who wrote the pros and cons? There appear to be a lot of assumptions being made. Were these timescales etc taken directly from the council officials or are PFANS making it up to suit the...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

Well, if you were at the meeting then you will have been aware that there was a very strong view that there should not be a decant. There was also a discussion about the way forward and that this was followed by a vote which in the vast majority supported the Parents Council pursuing the original p...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

I have attended the last two parent council meetings and at no time was there any mention of their involvement in this propaganda exercise. Indeed w...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

There's no obvious good one. That may well be the case, but I believe that there are many parents who accept the court's decision and want officials to put their energies into finding solutions that work for everyone in the community. Of course nobody is too keen to say this out loud as it is viewe...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

The Powerleague site is rarely used during the day. If the council build the school on the Scottish power site they could surely come to some agreement with Powerleague to use the astro turf, so beloved of many PFANs, in school-time. This would allow the site of the new school to be smaller.

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

Anyway, leaving aside these distractions, the most important thing is to find a sensible way forward. So the Council should seek to find a way to overcome the legal judgement, AND - consider an alternative site for the school. I think it's highly unlikely they'll do both. Might be hard to justify t...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

I know Lady P made that rather careless throwaway remark about it not being self evident that a school advances wellbeing but that wasn't the core of her judgement on the 2003 Act which was that the Act may give Councils very wide powers but it doesn't go so far as to allow them to override normal ...

If found not Common Good Land, PPAG's case has no foundation in Law. Could CEC sue for frivolous litigation without substance and claim for legal costs incured? In that case the Council should appeal if they think that's the next step. At the moment, before they've appealed, or if they decide not to appeal, or nobody can prove the land isn't CG, the school isn't going on your preferred site. Just as it was going on the Park after the first court judgement....

Those of us of a more cynical nature, believed that using the name "Portobello Park" instead of, and not as well as "the Golfie", meant that many people in the area did not engage in the "democratic consultation" because they thought it was somewhere else. I understand that, normally when these type...

I wonder what a new build can provide that a refurb can't. The current building can certainly accommodate 1400 + pupils. I do find it odd that we don't refurb instead of pulling down if the basic structure is sound. We wouldn't do this with our own homes as the cost would be prohibitive. Why then do we not even consider it for public buildings? Right. But you've got things the wrong way round. It is much more cost ef...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG win legal appeal

A refurb will be off the table because the building form is fundamentally ill suited to a school. It certainly wouldn't be a cheap or cost effective option, even before you consider the cost and educational disruption of an extended decant. At the end of it you'd still have a inadequate building co...

Maybe with a school like PHS it could be done n a phased way and there may be no need for full decant. Castlebrae is well under capacity and could cope with a few portacabins. Holyrood is also at least 100 short on capacity so with a few portacabins could accommodate more. The host schools may not b...

So you are too old to have kids going to the new school so why do you 'give a toss' about the school being built on Porty Park?
