Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
Reading the piece in today's Evening News makes me glad I moved out of Porty. NIMBYism at its very worst. I do despair.

Re: Central Bar - concern over opening hours
Playing devil's advocate here, but surely even with a 9am licence these kids still potentially could be walking past people who have been drinking for four hours come lunchtime, or seven hours come home time? On that basis is the 7am opening really that much of a concern?

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
If the appeal is lost it remains to be seen whether an appeal is made to the Supreme Court in London - but the costs of that would make the Court of Session costs look like small change.Pal of Porty wrote: I just hope the Council will commence with the building work once PPAG have lost this appeal.

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
The best way of proceeding with the school as soon as possible is to destroy PPAG financially. Jamesie-In closing or to be precise; when PPAG sat down, our Counsel requested that a decision on expenses should be deferred, not sure of the implications? Difficult to say why without being there to see...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
Marilyne MacLaren spoke at today's demo in the park. Interestingly, not only are the council suing for costs, they will also ask the court to ensure that PPAG put up a bond, in advance of their appeal. Suspected this might occur - known as caution (pronounced kayshon) - the likelihood being no bond...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
Surely in cases such as this when the council have won the first case and an appeal is brought the council would then go after costs (in this case from PPAG) for costs from the first case? That seems fair to me. That would make sense but it actually isn't the case. The marking of an appeal normally...

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
Not had time to read through the whole thread so apologies if this has already been covered, but did the Petitioners seek a protective costs order at the start of the hearing, and if so were they successful?

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
You mean the judge making the appeal rather than the parties? That wouldn't be possible in terms of the Court of Session Rules - it's up to one of the parties to kickstart the appeal process.Porty wrote:Presumably the judge could refer it to the inner house directly?

Re: New Portobello High School - PPAG Judicial Review
Question. If Lady Dorrian finds in favour of the Council, do PPAG have any further recourse to appeal? Is there a higher court or will this finally be an end to it? I believe any decision from the Court of Session can be appealed in the Supreme Court so my guess would be that they could appeal. How...

Caroline Hosking, secretary of Portobello Community Council, added: "I am still concerned about the heights and the density of the dwellings and how 739 houses will add to traffic problems. It is going to be here in Portobello for a long time and it is a big development so it's got to be right." Ca...

I can't afford that but I'm tempted with a DVD upscaler. I picked up the Samsung HD-870 upscaler for about £50 recently and I am well impressed with that model. Word of warning - after months of decent service this model packed in on the 30th. Will have to go through the hassle of getting it picked...

This story in tonight's News gave me my biggest laugh in ages. I checked the front cover to make sure it wasn't a copy from 1 April that I'd picked up by accident. Go into any pub on the Portobello seafront on a weekday evening outwith "summer" and you'll see how hard a struggle it is to attract the...

I recently bought a Samsung PS42Q97HD plasma TV and a Samsung HD870 upscaling DVD player, along with a Sky + box. I wanted a "splurge" when I moved out of Porty and this was it. I've always been a fan of plasma over LCD and while its heavier and less energy-efficient the TV rocks. You get a faint bu...

Sparkling water, bog rolls, kitchen rolls, washing and household atuff is tremendous value too. I also love the "treasure hunt" items that you get there. Got to agree with the general consensus re Costco but they aren't always the cheapest. I had to purchase a vast quantity of lager at the tail end...
