Hi there I just posted about a found cat in the main forum, but I don't think it's your pal's as this one is completely black all over (I also saw the notice about Domino in the window of Acorn Pet Centre and the pic didn't look like th eone that's hanging around my flat). I hope Domino is found, bu...

Have you lost a cat? Or: what to do with a lost/stray cat?

Hi everyone Sorry, I hope this isn't in the wrong place on the forum... I live in Portobello High Street and recently a cat has started coming in my kitchen window. She (I know nothing of cats, but she appears to be female) doesn't have a collar and seems hungry and to want to stay when she gets in ...

As I've just mentioned in the main bit of the forum, I ended up having to post on here about some car vandalism tonight as I couldn't get through to the police and it's not exactly a 999 situation. This doesn't seem right at all. I do appreciate that there are more serious things for the police to ...

Friday night car vandalism

If your car registration number is L673 VTC and you are parked in front of the vet on Porty High Street, you will not be happy to learn that a bunch of young men smashed your car window screen in at about 10:45. I tried to call the police but was put in a massive queue due to "a high volume of calls...

I think they can and that people with loud annoying voices should be made to have their conversations outside, lest they cause an epidemic of passive hearing loss.

(I'm trying to redress the balance of grumpy old men, which has been moaned about, by being a grumpy young woman!)

Re: I miss my local

Dalriada could be SO much better, they are sitting on a goldmine but they don't seem to realise it. I know, it's a bit shambolic. I always feel like I've wandered uninvited into someone's (admittedly rather grand) house. The younger waiting staff are normally really nice, but there's rarely enough ...

Heh heh maybe! That might have been a good way to stop the fighting too: me popping my head out the window and saying "excuse me chaps, do you know the score?"

Yep it was about 4.30 and when the police turned up they went straight into the Glassblower, which is where I presume it started. The pugilists had dispersed by then (maybe into the Portobello Bar?). The weird thing is that when I first called the number of Porty Police Station, I got through to a c...

Fighting on a Sunday Afternoon

Has anyone else noticed that Porty High Street is pretty bad for fisticuffs? I witnessed my second massive physical fight of the year this afternoon. In fact I called the police because the fighting goons just about crashed through my front door and it was pretty serious (in my book anyway) with muc...

I was sad that Utopia closed. They did lovely lunches. The fish and chips were spectacular. Possibly the best I've ever had. It was the only pub around here that I would go to. Now my only option for drinkipoos and lunch on a Sunday is the Dalradia (that's probably mispelled I know) which is OK, but...

Just in case anyone is interested... apparently all the conservation grant money has gone for this year and most for next year is accounted for. Ah well, sounded like it might be a bit of a lengthy process anyway, plus not entirely applicable to our situation, so I don't know why the Council surveyo...

Thanks folks. I'll read that other thread now. I've spoken to a few peeps at the Council this afternoon and have a number for someone in Conservation and Design. Sounds like the grant may be applicable for replacing some things to make the facade look like it did originally. Hmm I'll speak to this p...

Grant Aid for building improvements?

Hi there. I moved into Porty High Street last year and while I love my new place, the building I'm in is in desperate need of repair. I've had a survey done by the Edinburgh Stair Partnership which confirmed the need for work (the chimneys in particular are in a dangerous state of near collapse - ee...

What a great idea! I love flickr too - it's amazing, like rummaging through a drawerfull of stranger's photos. I've joined the group to keep up to date, but I'm afraid my own photos aren't particularly artistic although I'll try to make an effort (I'm kelliepie).

Paper recyling in Portobello?

Hello! Can anyone tell me where there is a collection bin thing for newspaper recycling? I've kept an eye out but can't see any. The mountain of old papers in my box room is threatening to collapse and squash me. I've noticed that some houses get those blue plastic bags to put their stuff in. I'm in...

Yep some leaflets went up indicating that Mark's would become a Thai place aaaaaages ago and there's been no activity since. I wish someone would at least put a gate across the doorway to stop people spewing up in it. It's looking really run down, I do hope it gets spruced up soon.

Between the two 'drums' ( which now look stumpy) there used to be a tall, semi-circular advertising tower made of glazed bricks which rose up 33 feet above the canopy. It was lit from the inside with lights which constantly changed colour. Wow that sounds amazing ! Was the open air swimming pool fr...

I know how cool must it have been to have 2 cinemas in Bath Street! At least it's still there. It looks absolutely massive though. I may have to join the Bingo to get in and have a good old snoop!

Yep! I've done some snooping of my own on the intranot superinfohighweb this afternoon and it seems that it used to be a cinema, as did the recently demolished Suite Factory (which opened in 1919!) Portobello Cinema: Opened 1939, refurbished and renamed George in 1954. Closed 1974. Bingo since then....

The George (Bingo Hall)

Hi there. Sorry if this has been discussed before or should be common knowledge! I've been fascinated by The George in Bath Street for years. The architecture is so unusual for the area, I just love it. I'd like to know more about it's history. What was it used for originally? Does anyone have or kn...

This is really worrying. I think that this has to be tackled asap as when the school holidays and even longer days come, it will likely get worse. Good Chip Shops?

Can anyone recommend a good chip shop round these here parts? I had a rubbish fish supper on Sunday. Admittedly, Sunday may be a bit of a crap day to get a supper, but surely that shouldn't matter that much. This was inedible and went in the bin. Bleugh! So where can I get nice fresh chips, fluffy f...
