golf
i agree that there should be a provision for a range of sporting activities, golf included, but the subject of this thread was about saving the existing golf course and i made a point about the PFANS proposal which calls for a new and improved public golf course. i do not agree with this part of the...

to be honest bearcub, i haven't seen any down here either, only on the high street and have certainly not seen them handing out any fines. i wonder if they have actually generated any cash or if they are costing us...
i hope she paid several on the spot fines libby but somehow i doubt it

save our golf course
i do not describe portobello as nepotistic or socially exclusive, only the sport of golf . how can the golf course be described as a public space when you "could be killed" just by being in that space, this is the point i am trying to make. i do not understand your comment about assumptions being ma...

dogs and environmental wardens (merged)
since the introduction of environmental wardens i have yet to see any impact on the amount of dog mess on the beach and prom. i, perhaps naively, thought that they would have an effect and that this would solve the problem of tarring all dog owners with the same brush etc. what i think would be grea...

golf
sorry mate of marya, have been away or i would have replied earlier. but where to start... i find golf to be a nepotistic and socially exclusive sport and it is this that forms my objection to the game. a golf course takes up an extremely large area of green space for its purposes, supposedly this s...

excellent idea, would have no objection to a few specialist charity shops which do not encroach on existing traders, however i still think that the number of charity outlets should be capped.
ok i admit that perhaps the superstore would be a worse option than charity shops, but only slightly...

i too hold a heavy disdain for golf as an activity. it is anti-social and claims green space that could be used by all (you cannot picnic on a golf course, although i still try...) so why has a proposal for a new golf course been tagged onto the end of the pfans proposal? it seems very unpopular and...

skatepark
very interesting thread. i, for one, think that portobello is very well suited for a skatepark on this side of the city. as far as i am aware, the council has a fair amount of money already in place for a skatepark and have been talking about situating it in the meadows or inverleith park (ie they a...

I'll bet you'll get less police car patrols once the gates are locked. the police should be setting an example and performing their patrols on foot! i don't really understand the issue here, apart from a select few, there should be no vehicles on the promenade and locked gates are the obviously the...

charity shops
wether you agree with charity or not, the fact remains that charity shops are taking over porty and i, for one, think it is a disgrace. i take particular offence at the council owned shop on the high street, recently refurbished with council money to provide a much needed retail unit then handed ove...

dog owners
sorry, i've been away for a while. I only said that there were a minority of dog owners - along with cyclists and mad kite-flyers - that caused a problem...i wouldn't dare tar everyone with the same brush. I think that most dog owners, etc are responsible  hope that this clears up the misunder...

good point, i'm sure most people would be ok with getting the pool back but, apparently there is some problem with the council's public liability insurance when it comes to paddling pools. i heard it was something to do with cholera (!) but who knows. anyway i don't think that any of the old council...

the promenade
i have posted a few comments in other threads on the subject of a community space on the promenade. i wonder if anyone agrees with me. i had a bit of a go about the plans for the old paddling pool. it is the centre point of the prom and i think could be better used than sticking up a basketball cour...

the beach is a draw for kids from all over edinburgh - just as it is for the hundreds of visitors who come from all over. i think the focus should really be down there. i have already commented on the plans for "the paddy" and the need for some kind of focal point for the whole community down on the...

sorry, i did not mean to dismiss the plans in such a gung-ho manner, i am sure that the majority of local people involved are perfectly happy with the plans. i still feel, however, that there is a real need for some kind of focal point for the whole community (and visitors) on the prom. i feel that ...

we're new to the area but took an interest in that bit of land pretty quickly. i asked the council about it and they said that it is still council owned but that the portobello amenities society had (or were getting) the funding for a basketbell court. i personally feel that this is a real waste for...
