Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
I see Izzy's has a sign up saying under new management tonight. When did that happen? Says it's going to be selling European and Indian food all day.

Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
The Mousehole Deli looks like it'll be an attractive addition to the High Street.
And I noticed today that the newsagent that was Julia's on the corner of Bellfield Street has its 'for sale' sign down and looked there was work going on. Anyone know what that's going to be?

I take it Victor Hugo has closed? Supposed to be closed for a week about a month ago for essential maintenance but it hasn't reopened and I see the VH signs are down.

Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
I was hoping it was a hardware store too - surely a place for one on the High Street? But the sign says homeware and gifts so not too hopeful....

Re: Woodwares closing / Sainsburys coming to Portobello
Was certainly closed yesterday afternoon before four which I thought was a bit odd - unless they were having extra holidays? Not been along the High Street today. Staff were still saying before Christmas that they didn't know when it would close - hope they got some notice.
EDIT - It's open today!

A4 leaflet through the door today promoting the Baileyfield site as site for the new school - 'distributed by a group of Portobello residents and parents who want the school as quickly as possible'. Wonder what group that might be then?!

Can't believe hardware shop to close. That will be a big loss to High Street - staff always so knowledgable and helpful. Mixed feelings about Sainsbury's but sad to see that shop go.

Submarine!
Anyone else spot the submarine going along the Forth today? It's just gone past Inchkeith heading east followed by what I presume is the pilot boat. Spookily when I looked up the Ship AIS site, nothing showing at all for Forth - no ships, no submarines!

We were part of the pilot scheme and put out our container every week. It has always been collected so no problem here. Do many others in your street take part? Wonder if they are just not seeing many and missing yours? Most folk on our street seem to take part.

She didn't have it in the house. She went to the bank and withdrew it. She was convinced that she had spoken to her roofer on the phone when she tried to confirm the supposed son's story.

High Street Joppa?
I've been doing some family research recently and was pleased to discover an ancestor born in Portobello, where I now live. However, I'm a bit confused. Her birth certificate seems to say the family lived at High Street, Joppa in 1868. Was there ever a High Street in Joppa separate to Portobello Hig...
