I'm not saying that my surname was the only factor in my not getting re-elected. Obviously the new proportional voting system was going to make things difficult. I lost half my ward due to the boundary changes required to introduce multi-member wards. Maureen and I split the new bigger Portobello/Cr...

Bob, the superstore site I've thought about before but ruled out as an option because I didn't think Duddingston House Properties would play ball. Maybe BL Developments might take a different view? Stephen, you can't get more central in Portobello than the High Street! And. as I say, all future major development in Portobello will be west of the Figgate Burn unless we start knocking down Joppa and the town centre! Dear All, Bob Jefferson kindly posted my e-mail of 23rd March to Andrew Holmes, Roy Jobson, Ewan Aiken and Ian Perry. Anonymity encourages "gossip" and "tittle-tattle" precisely because such postings lack real-life accountability. Question 1: No. An election doesn't deliver a verdict on one specific policy. In that respect it's not "clear" with respect to that policy. There's also a danger that, if it does, the election itself has become a referendum rather than a verdict on the multiplicity of issues - sometimes conflicting ...

I would say that a vote in an election indicates public support for the general direction of a party's policies. It indicates a balance in favour. What an election does not allow is a vote on any particular policy. That's why referenda are held - they give a much clearer view of public support or ot...
