The Royal Bank in Portobello, but no more.
At one time, not so long ago, the Royal Bank of Scotland had three branches in Portobello. We also had a Clydesdale Bank Branch, but it closed. Soon, there will not be the RBS. We will be left with the TSB and The Bank of Scotland. Who will be first to leave the area and leave us with one bank? If y...

The "Old Parish" is for Sale
Bellfield Street is going up for sale. Those in charge could not care about those who use it. however, the fly in the ointment will be the graveyard it sits in. On top of that, the sale of St James has not yet gone through as the prospective buyers want planning permission to convert to housing and ...

Portobello Old Parish Church - will it close for good?
It would seem that the Kirk Session of the now "Portobello & Joppa" Parish Church, in other words, St Philips, is determined to close down these premises, for good. They want to sell them off as, in their words, it runs at a loss, mainly down to the way they do the accounting. Where will all those w...

The Church of Scotland in Portobello is no more
We no longer have a Church in Portobello. It would seem that the people of Portobello, nor the Church of Scotland could give a toss. The people in charge at Joppa have decreed that all non profitmaking places will be sold off regardless of any community needs. The watchword is PROFIT! What will go? ...

The nearest Church of Scotland Church to Portobello & Joppa. Craigentinny! It's to be closed, regardless of what the Congregation wants and taken over by Restalrig!

Re: You don't know what you have got until it's gone
So there we go, the St James Manse has been sold, the Church & Halls are up for sale. So, combine that with the Old Parish Manse sale, "Portobello & Joppa" will have about £1 MILLION Pounds in the kitty. What will they do with THAT? On top of that, the story is that the Old Parish will also be sold....

Well, that's it, both the Old Parish and St James' have closed as places of worship. The Church of Scotland is now based in Portobello & Joppa Parish Church, formally St Phillips'.

For those who do not know, perhaps for those who did not know Rudi, he has lost his last battle. His funeral will be on Tuesday, 3rd at Mortonhall at 11.00am. Rudi was omne of the characters of Portobello and many still remember the shop in Portobello High Street. http://announce.jpress.co.uk/382762...

Re: You don't know what you have got until it's gone
Neither am I, only asking what will Portobello lose by this? What facilities would be lost and will it be a step forward? Few seem to realise what is happening and/or what the consequences might be. The decision to go with St Philip's as a basis seems to be perverse to say the least as there is insu...

Re: You don't know what you have got until it's gone
Just as an update, St James' rejected the principle on Sunday. More a hostile take over than a union, was one comment. Portobello & Joppa Parish would be St Philip's, run by those at St Philip's as St Philip's for the benefit of those who were St Philip's members and everyone else could either accep...

You don't know what you have got until it's gone
This could be true for Portobello later this year. Plans are to close both St James' Church and The Old Parish Church, leaving St Philip's as the only Church of Scotland presence, which will be in Joppa. I only found out on speaking to some people this week. The parishioners at the Old Parish have r...

I suppose ANYTHING that reduces the amount of traffic in the morning and afternoon rush hours will be welcome. It would help as Portobello will not be getting a tram service, well, at least the NEXT century!

Just to let those who have not heard, Andrew will be retiring shortly. His last service will be on Sunday 2nd June. If you see him about on his electric bike, wish him, and Jeannie, well, please. he is such a nice person, Portobello will be a slightly colder place without him.

Note letter from DC in tonight's EEN. Do Bowlers need all of the current rink? Could a portion be retained? I must confess I have never set foot inside the building, but I am sure the more uses that it can be put to, the more people will use it.

Re: Brighton Place road repairs
Retaining cobbles might be pleasing to the eye, but, I'm sure the noise created by traffic on them must drive the residents there up the wall at times. In addition, how much extra will this cost us and how long before they will need relifting again compared to a regular surface? Oh, and can they fix...

A facility of that size must have other uses. Basketball? Remember that the facilities at the "new" PHS was criticised for lack of spectator seating. There must be other sports clubs in need of indoor facilities.

Re: Portobello Community Council
In the past, I have described the PCC as a bunch of self centred self interest groups, each with their own agenda, each trying to push their own views on others. For example, who represents those who DO want a superstore? Who represents those who want the PHS built on Portobello Park? The result is ...

Re: The shops thread (was: Empty Shops on Porty High St)
There are plenty of retailers in Portobello, it's just that there is no competition.
Another Quality Butcher
Another Quality Greengrocer
Another Quality Fishmonger.
It's not that the present incumbents are not good, they are, it's just they have a virtual monopoly, unless you go to a Supermarket.
